El Dorado Rum
Demerara Distillers, known for producing the celebrated El Dorado Rum, is situated in Guyana and holds a distinguished history that dates back to 1670. This remarkable timeline began with the cultivation of sugarcane along the banks of the Demerara River, with rum production following soon after. Over centuries, numerous distilleries sprung up along the river, each with its unique method of rum production. By the 20th century, these distilleries were gradually consolidated into a single entity, now known as Demerara Distillers, a beacon of Guyana's rich rum-making heritage.
The production techniques utilized by Demerara Distillers are a testament to the company's commitment to tradition and quality. El Dorado Rum is crafted from Demerara sugar, a variety known for its rich, deep sweetness, and fermented with a proprietary strain of yeast. One of the distinctive features of Demerara Distillers is its array of historic stills, each imparting its unique character to the rum. Among these are the world’s only wooden Coffey still, the Versailles single wooden pot still, and the Enmore two-column wooden still. The diversity of these stills enables the creation of an extraordinary range of rum styles and flavors, establishing El Dorado as a brand that offers unparalleled complexity and depth.
Beyond producing exceptional rum, Demerara Distillers is deeply rooted in its commitment to sustainability, both environmental and social. The distillery has initiated measures to reduce waste, recycle resources, and ensure responsible water management. These measures include a water treatment plant and an anaerobic digester, which aids in waste management. On the social front, Demerara Distillers plays a pivotal role in supporting the Guyanese community by creating jobs and opportunities for local people, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and investing in the community through educational and healthcare initiatives. In this way, Demerara Distillers is not just an esteemed rum producer, but also a vital contributor to the economic and social fabric of Guyana.
