New York Wine Country

Thu, Jan 25, 24

When we think about US states that make wine what comes to mind? For most it is California, Oregon and Washington, but did you know that New York produces the third most wine in the nation? Right behind Washington and ahead of Oregon for overall production, New York makes wines throughout the state, whether on the eastern coast of Long Island, the valleys of the Hudson River or upstate in the Finger Lakes region. Great wines are being produced all over.

This week, we have one such wine, Empire Estate Riesling, in our tasting. This particular bottle comes from the Finger Lakes area, an area known for cold winters and deep snow. The area produces more than 80% of all of New York’s wines. Vines are nestled around 11 lakes which hold heat during the harsh winters that allow the vines to survive. Another prominent feature of the area is Cornell University, one of the leaders in wine research in the nation, yes there are people who get paid to research wine! The folks at the university have helped the vineyards in the surrounding area ensure they are making a great product and can keep their vines thriving!

The finger lakes have started to foster a reputation for making great Riesling and Cabernet Franc. Their Riesling standout as being, typically, bone dry. They have very high acidity that makes them excellent for pairing with food and a nice combo of minerality and fruit. People often associate Riesling with sweet wines, but don’t be shy, come and try a beautiful dry example with us this week at our downtown location, or stop in to your nearest Crown and see what they have available!
