South Africa's Classic Wines Thu, Aug 03, 23 | weekly wine wine africa wines South Africa's Classic Wines! South Africa is an often-overlooked region for wine some wonderful wines at unbelievable prices! Whether you like racy mineral driven reds or bold and powerful reds there is a little bit of something for everyone. We often think of South Africa as having one foot in the old world and one foot in the new world as far as the style of wines coming out of the country. We’ve got five great wines to choose from this week so stop in and stock up!We’ll start with De Westof’s Limestone Hill Chardonnay, an unoaked type of Chard that has a plenty of acidity and minerality to entice any Burgundy lover. Couple that with a bit of a stone fruit, think peaches and nectarines, note that add a bit of depth and body and you’ve got a Chard that will please any crowd. Like with most high-quality chard, this wine will pair with a huge range of foods, we think it works particularly well with grilled chicken thighs. We can’t talk about South African white wine without diving into Chenin Blanc. Historically called Steen in the country, it has helped put South Africa on the map for fine wine production. Our first wine made with the grape is Essay Chenin Blend, typically you’ll find Chenin is a one man show, but in this iteration it is blended with Viognier and Marsanne, this adds a bit of body and adds to the fruity and floral notes that make the grape so loved.Next will be a 100% Chenin Blanc, Badenhurst’s Secateurs Chenin. This wine shows off a medium body but with great fresh acidity. It leans into pear notes along with citrus and a touch of white peaches. A soft white flower note makes this one particularly appealing. What if we told you that you can get a red wine, under $10, that has enough fruit to get along with a Napa cab drinker, but enough savoriness to get along with a French or Italian red wine drinker? There is a reason the Excelsior Syrah is our wine director’s favorite sub $10 red, because it fits that bill! Classic dark fruit notes you expect from Syrah with just a touch of black pepper and earth. We think you should just order a case and make it your new house wine. We’ll bring up the rear with South Africa’s classic red, Pinotage. A somewhat misunderstood grape, we think the Barista Pinotage makes for the perfect wine to serve with barbecue brisket. Bold and complex with notes of coffee and maraschino cherries. A unique wine that you can really only find in South Africa! By Luke Stephenson
